Our Thursday night webinar on Clearance, Control & The Tunnel Rule gave one of the most practical insights yet into how learners can avoid some of the most common driving test failures.
If you missed the session or just want a refresher, here are the key takeaways — including how experienced drivers often get it wrong, and the new BDS method that gives learners a safe, examiner-approved way to handle narrow roads and meeting traffic.
📍 What Is Inadequate Clearance?
Most drivers think that if you pass without touching a parked car, you’re fine. Wrong.
Examiners expect:
- 0.5m minimum clearance
- 1 metre or more preferred (a full door-width)
We covered why passing too closely (even without touching) risks serious faults:
- Sudden door openings
- Hidden pedestrians
- Cyclists and scooters weaving through
If the space looks tight, it IS tight. Don’t chance it. Don’t guess. Hold back and show the examiner your awareness.
🏠 The Tunnel Rule – Why DVSA Logic Fails
DVSA theory says:
- Give way if parked cars are on your side
- First one to the gap goes first
🚫 That logic collapses in real life.
Other drivers don’t follow the script, and reading priority in fast-paced traffic causes uncertainty and risk. We revealed the new BDS method:
✅ Only 3 Rules (And They Work)
- Pull left early = Give the tunnel
- Stay centre = Occupy the tunnel
- React clearly if the other driver gives way
No signals. No waving. No guesswork. Your positioning is your communication.
